Notice of motion-Cllr D. Grady “The Killarney Town Council would provide an underpass for people using Kilcummin Road at the Junction of Upper Lewis Road onto the Bypass, as the recently carried out works are inadequate and unsafe for both pedestrians and cyclists”
Despite the Traffic Calming measures that have been carried out here, this junction remains a serious hazard to both pedestrians and cyclists, most of whom are children using the sports fields in the ballybribbeen area. They must still cross two lanes of fast flowing traffic. We would be failing in our duties as Councillors if we turn a blind eye to this danger.
I am proposing that we ask the relevant authorties to put an underpass for pedestrians and cyclists until we get the funding to put an underpass to take all the traffic.

“That we killarney Town Council direct the Town Manager or appropriate authority to re-open the old entrance into Pinewood Estate as requested by the residents”.
The residents of Pinewood Estate have good cause to reopen this entrance. When we look at the plans of Park Store we see a very large building restricting the view to exit this area and also when we look to the right the view is restricted. In addition to this we have constant traffic jams from Hegartys to the entrance to Tesco and this is without a sod being turned for the new Aldi Store. We have almost 300 cars in Pinewood Estate belonging to residents in addition to visitors. I am now asking the Manager to seek legal advice on closing the original entrance to this Estate.

“That we Killarney Town Council write to An Taoiseach stating that we totally object to the taxpayers of Ireland having to pay €6 Million for US Military Flights in Shannon.”
The people of Ireland have come out time and time again against the US Military using Shannon Airport for transporting American Troops and supplies to Iraq. The Irish taxpayers are now footing the €6 Million for these flights into Shannon, effectively meaning that we are subsiding the American War Effort. Over 700 military aircraft have landed at the Airport in the last twelve months, transporting thousands of troops. The use of Shannon as a means of transporting troops and equipment to Iraq violates Ireland’s constitutional neutrality. Martin Cullen recently said the increasing number of troops through Shannon is good for business. This business has led to the deaths of 100,000 Iraqi citizens and the maiming, torture and dehumanizing of thousands more. Although Shannon has secured an estimated €14 Million from US business in 2004 and €25 Million in the previous two years – the Governments €6 Million exemption effectively acts as a subsidy to the US Military. Prior to the war in Iraq I was proud to be part of a peace walk held in Killarney which was the only one held in Europe by a local Authority.
War shall not be declared and the state shall not participate in any war save with the assent of Dail Eireann – Irish Constitution Article 28.3.1

Notice of motion-Cllr D. Grady “That we Killarney Town Council would:
(i) Remove briars and dumping.
(ii) Clean up, in the areas of Arbutus Grove including the section onto the Bypass and the area onto the six acre field on the western side which are drawing rats. This was brought to the attention of the Council two years ago.”
Both Engineers and Officials have inspected this area in the past two years. A little work has been done in this area. We need to start the cleanup of briars, rubbish and tree branches both inside and outside the green fence on the Bypass side. At the western side we need to erect a timber fence, where the wire fence has fallen down (Similar to the wooden fence erected by the council near Woodlawn Cross beside the Three Lakes Filling Station). This area is littered with household rubbish and hedge cuttings. These are drawing vermin into the area. There are only a few offenders in the area that do not have rubbish bins. I am asking this Council to find out in a joint operation those who do not pay for for refuse collection in the Urban Area. If any of these people cannot afford to pay, let us know and the Waiver System can apply. We also have people outside this area who are dumping rubbish.
In Arbutus Drive we have a wall that needs cleaning of ivy and we should request the owner to clean it (Tesco side).

Notice of motion-Cllr D. Grady Re: Closure of 30 beds at Tralee General Hospital
“It is an absolute disgrace that 30 beds are being closed at Tralee General Hospital for 3 months from June 7th again this year. This is to facilitate the hospital to stay within its budget, which means that the budget is totally inadequate. Kerry people deserve better than this. We also have an influx of tourists to our county at this time, some of whom, for various reasons, will have to avail of the services of our hospital. It will have a serious effect on waiting lists and put extra strain on the staff, who are already stretched to the limit. It is so unfair to ask people who are sick to wait longer for treatment. We were promised by the government that we would have an improved health service with an end to waiting lists. This is just another one of their false promises. If they channelled some of the 52 million Euro that was spent acquiring computers for electronic voting which will never be used, as they have a lifespan of only 5 years minimum, we could keep these beds open which amount to 2,520 bed nights over the three months. Out patient clinics are also being closed for 1 week during the Festival of Kerry and 2 weeks at Christmas, again causing longer waiting lists. This is totally unacceptable to us in Kerry and I ask the council to pass this motion, and circulate to all councils in the Southern Health Board area.” Passed
