Killarney’s superintendent says he is concerned about the character of some of the people collecting for charities on our streets. The issue was raised at Killarney’s Joint Policing Committee meeting.
Killarney Town councillor Donal Grady said there could be three or four charities collecting in the town on a given day. The permits for such collections are issued centrally in Dublin and Cllr Grady says something has to be done.
Superintendent Flor Murphy said he has instructed his Gardai to check the permits of all collectors in Killarney. He said he was concerned about the character of some of those collecting for charity as he said some had criminal convictions. He said he would be concerned about where the money is going. The meeting heard there is no vetting of who collects money on the street but the charities themselves are vetted in the permit procedure.
