Income from parking charges at Kerry General Hospital over the last four years generated over €2.5 million. To the end of November 2013, the revenue from parking at the hospital in 2013 was €537,000, the operating costs of the parking facility was €40,000. In 2012 the money generated for the full year was €639,684 with operating costs of €45,856.

It is clear that the HSE has in effect imposed an indirect tax on the people to Kerry by charging visitors far in excess of the cost in providing the parking facilities. It is also worth noting that 23% of revenues raised are likely to be returned to the Government in the form of VAT.

I call on the HSE to reduce the parking charges to a more manageable level and I also propose that a waiver system be introduced for patients that require assistance and care of family while in hospital. These car park costs effectively amount to a ‘stealth tax’ on patients and their families who are already under significant strain & stress.

Year Income generated  Operating costs
2010 €650,063 €70,029
2011 €707,635 €53,069
2012 €639,684 €45,856
2013* €537,855 €40,754
